How many of you have consindered the number of roles each one of us plays during a single day? You are someone's child, someone's sibling, someone's co-worker etc. Have you noticed how many different responsibilities these roles require?
Most of our actions are done mechanically, but if you just stand up, hold it there and notice the facts as an outsider, you will discover a lot of ineteresting things in a variety that might surprise you.
Each role, requires certain skills, certain backround knowledge that is built throughout time and everyday practice plus experience.
Apart from the roles that we are prepared for, there are also roles that might occur throughout the day, have a brief timeline and happen for many and strange (yet) to us reasons. Hasn't it ever happened to you to be puzzled about something, work on it really hard on your mind, and then a complete stranger (who has no idea about your problem), says something irrelevant for a second and magically solves the whole issue? Is it luck? Or is it a sign that each one of us has an important role in their fellow-citizens' lives? Or is it a way to show reward or critisism to other people's actions?
I started to believe that we are all part of the same "higher power" that somehow connects us all. People tend to adapt roles such as teachers, help-providers, listeners, problem-solvers, rewarders, critics (without even noticing most the time) and they manage to "manipulate" other people. To show them what is right, or what they, themselves, consider right and help them get over the issues they are into.
Yesterday at noon, I was on my way to visit my friend Vicky, and while being in the bus, I saw this little girl, she must have been around ten years old or so. She was so helpful towards other people, she lifted the things they dropped, she helped them sit down or hold on when the bus moved suddently, and when people thanked her, she was so shy. So my role there, was to observe, think, and finally conclude that my role was to reward and encourage her. A simple gesture, not anything fancy. So just before I was ready to take off from the bus, I held my heart, and told her that she is remarkable, and that she should keep up the good work, for the world needs people like her to be a better place. She was stunned of course, but my words, even though only words, effected her in a way that nothing else would. So in moments of insecurity and puzzle, she will have this simple comment to keep her going, to keep her focused, and finally succeed.
There are millions of these examples out there. You have no idea how many times we "accidentally" help or are being helped by others. How easy it is to influence and be influenced at the same time. Even the simplest look on your face, can be helpful for a person. A smilling face (not grinning), a happy face, makes the day for a complete stranger that might be having rough times at that moment. So think about it. Stand up, hold it there and observe. This might save a life, either a stranger's or your very own.
Believe it or not, I wrote that and it came easier on english. Soon I will write something similar in the greek forum as well. I'm open to every comment about the content of the text , suggestion or even correction :).
