The difference between humans and animals

Ok there are some obvious flaws in my logic, but here goes anyway :-
The difference between humans and animals is that animals act purely on instinct, whereas humans are able to BECOME AWARE of their thoughts and instincts, and can therefore choose NOT to act upon those thoughts/instincts. If we are NOT AWARE of how our mind/instinct works, then POTENTIALLY we could become "enslaved" (ie we could lose our individual sovereignty) because we would be unaware of the mind manipulation that is being played on us, and thus we could lose our god given freedom/"free will".
So what I am trying to say is that humans are born with a thing called "freedom/free-will" which means that we can "override" our thoughts/instincts, whereas animals cannot do that.
What do you reckon ?
